Holocaust Martyrs and Heroism Day - "Ordinary People" as Heroes for Hiding Jews. Please join us on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. for an event led by guest speaker Leo Ullman. Of the approximately 159,000 Jews in the Netherlands before World War II, an estimated 25,000 men, women, and children went into hiding, including 3 1/2 year old Leo Ullman. Mr. Ullman will present his and his family’s personal experiences, which are also chronicled in his book, 796 Days and a film, There Were Good People Doing Extraordinary Deeds…Leo Ullman’s Story. A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School and Business School, Mr. Ullman has a long and distinguished career as a lawyer and as a real estate entrepreneur. Mr. Ullman is profoundly devoted to promoting Holocaust education, including serving many years as Chairman of the Anne Frank Center, USA, and presently as Chairman of the Foundation for the National Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam, Inc. A candle lighting ceremony will feature remarks by Professor Emile Schrijve, General Director and founder of the Jewish Cultural Quarter in Amsterdam, Mr. Robert-Jan Schimmel, grandson of Hendrik and Jannigje Schimmel ("Righteous Among the Nations"), who had Mr. Ullman, and Ms. Julie Marthe Cohen, a second generation survivor and curator of the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. Laura Ullman Schwartz, daughter of Leo and Kay Ullman, will moderate the Q&A. The event will begin with a performance of Kol Nidre on cello.
